Valentine’s day is over. If like me you ARE DESPERATELY LONELY, I mean a romantic soul, then you might want to sit down with a nice hot chocolate and your significant other and bask in the love that you can only dream of. Here is our list of the 10 best movies to keep romance alive after Valentine’s Day.
10. When Harry Met Sally
We start this countdown with a RomCom classic. Even if you haven’t seen this movie before I can almost guarantee you’ve heard of the “I’ll have what she’s having” scene. With such sharp dialogue, When Harry Met Sally sets itself apart from other RomComs and it still stands the test of time. So why watch it? That’s easy, it’ll make you remember what it’s like to fall in love. Also it stars Carrie Fisher and we need to watch as much of her work as possible.
9. 10 Things I Hate About You
I feel like I’ve missed a trick not putting this in at #10. Just look at how 90’s the cast looks. With so many stories intersecting, it would have been easy for the movie to get lost in itself and become a complete mess but thanks to the writing and the acting it works and we’re left with a quirky teen RomCom. So why watch it? Because it can remind us all how awkward dating in our teens can be, and that’s always good for a laugh.
8. Silver Linings Playbook
One of my favourite movies of 2012 just look at the cast and try not to be impressed. Also Jennifer Lawrence won an Oscar for her performance, so it’s pretty good. Directed by David O. Russell, who has some stellar movies under his belt, shows exactly why he is regarded as one of the finest around. It centres around a topic most people can relate to; heartbreak. Luckily for us the tale to redemption is an enthralling watch. Why watch it? It was nominated for Best Motion Picture at the Oscars and that goes to show just how good this is.
7. The Notebook
The most tragically romantic movie ever. You have Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in quite possibly the best romance movie this side of the millennium. The story of two people falling in love, we get to see the ups and downs of their relationship and it makes it feel real. Why watch it? As previously mentioned it is the most romantic movie I’ve seen, and one that will quite possibly set the mood for the night.
6. Annie Hall
If you like Woody Allen this is the movie for you. Being neurotic myself I can see my life playing out like this, obviously I’ll never make it as a comedian, for anyone who wants a realistic take on a relationship this is the movie for you. Why watch it? The actors seem like normal people, with normal jobs and normal problems, a movie for the people.
5. The Princess Bride
It’s so camp but so good. This movie mashes together a number of different genres, but it does it expertly. For the wrestling fans among you, this stars a certain giant. Why watch it? This is heavily influenced by fairy tales so it’s one the ladies will enjoy.
4. Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind
Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind is possibly the deepest movie in our list, it tackles some heartbreaking issues. A couple have each other memories erased but then regret it. A question for you all, would you remove all memories of an ex? Let me know your answers in the comments below.
So I’ll address the elephant in the room, the movie is French, but is there a more romantic language? One to certainly get the juices flowing. Amélie is an innocent girl who decides to help those around her, and proving you get back what you put in and discovers love.
2. La La Land
It won everything else but it misses out on the #1 spot on our list. While I’m sure they are heartbroken by that, nevertheless, La La Land is the hit of the year and I fully expect it to clean up at the Oscars. Why watch it? Because it deserves to be watched, it’s that good.
One of my favourite movies ever and the most romantic movie worth watching. So far in this list I’ve likened myself to a neurotic and now a cynic, Rick just oozes class. Casablanca is a different kind of love story and one that I find absolutely fascinating. Why watch it? It is timeless, extremely quotable and one of the best movies ever made.
