We are living in a golden age of movie villains, with comic book movies partnered with CGI bringing out blockbusters every few months it’s no wonder, but who are the best villains? I take a look at my favourite ones, it will be a struggle to contain it to a top 10 but that’s what I’m aiming for here, as always you can comment if you feel I’ve missed any out or tweet me calling me an idiot @nerdhubonline

A few rules before we start, okay one rule, if it is a slasher movie the villain won’t be included, that’s for another list. let’s get started!

10 – Scar (The Lion King)

That’s right, a Disney villain, I love the Lion King. Voiced by Jeremy Irons who once again proves that a British villain is the best villain. It also helps that he breaks into the creepiest songs, and as we all know a good villain needs to break out in song.

9 – Norman Bates (Psycho)

If anyone calls me a mummy’s boy I’m going to make them watch Psycho. Hitchcock is the master of suspense and this movie is one of his finest. Norman Bates has influenced a number of other movie villains so he had to be placed somewhere on this list.

8 – Voldemort (Harry Potter)

The sad story of what can go wrong with a game of “Got your nose” When almost every wizard in the world spend 8 movies fearing you and you have a dedicated cult who will do anything you ask you’ve done something right in your life…you know… for a villain.

7 – Anton Chigurh (No Country For Old Men)

I know it’s hard to believe with a smile like that but Chigurh is one of the creepiest villains in movie history. He spends the movie hunting the main character around with an improvised weapon, because guns are so last year. Javier Bardem plays such a good villain, I would say he’s now being type cast and I’m okay with that.

6 – Terminator (The Terminator)

The role that launched Schwarzenegger to superstardom (Sorry Conan) sadly I wasn’t able to watch the Terminator in the cinema but how good is it?!? the reason he makes it onto the list is because I was actual cheering for him through this movie, he’s just so cool.

5 – Xenomorph (Alien)

This has caused some debate here at Nerdhub, some arguing that it should be higher, some arguing it shouldn’t be on the list, luckily it’s my list so they can so they can go forth and multiply. I don’t consider the Alien franchise a horror one, and if you are the villain for that many movies you deserve to be in on this list.

4 – Hans Gruber (Die Hard)

If I was going to build a movie villain it would be Hans Gruber, so suave and sophisticated, I can already hear the keyboard warriors asking why he’s not number one on the list, because the next three absolutely owned the villain role, Hans is the best of the rest.

3 – Darth Vader (Star Wars)

I love me some Star Wars, I was torn between Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine but Vader gets the nod because of how iconic he is, and can you really argue with that? he has one of the most iconic introductions in the franchise and he is the focus of most movies, even the newer ones.

2 – Hannibal Lecter (Silence of the Lambs)

Oh look another British person on the list! if you eat people odds are you belong on this list, but he’s not just any old cannibal, oh no, he’s also a forensic psychiatrist and serial killer. I might be a little biased towards Lecter because The Silence of the Lambs is one of the earliest movies I can remember, and he was a massive part of that.

1 – The Joker (Batman)

And it must come as no surprise that The Joker comes in at number one. Before you question my decision I want to ask you one thing, has there been a bad portrayal of the Joker? I can’t think of one, I make no secret over the fact that I am a DC fan boy so the Joker is the crowning jewel of villainy.
