Netflix has quickly established itself as the best media streaming platform around. Although the only real competition they face is from Amazon Instant Video, with that being said one question remains; Are Netflix originals now the benchmark for TV shows?
With so many shows on demand we have to break it down into categories lets start with animated shows, two come to mind.
F is for Family and Bojack Horseman, both good shows with different comedy styles but are they the benchmark? I’m sorry Netflix you won’t be winning the animated battle any time soon. Rick and Morty, South Park, The Simpsons, Family guy and American Dad are also out there meaning we are spoiled for choice for all our animated needs.
Moving onto comedies
I really like Master Of None and everyone is raving about Orange Is The New Black. We are only looking at shows that are currently running, and this gives Netflix the edge. It doesn’t have to compete with Friends, Scrubs or Parks and Recreations that being said I’m calling this one a draw It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia and The Big Bang Theory really level the playing field for this one, not bad company to be in though.
Jessica Jones, Daredevil and Luke Cage, to be added soon, gives Netflix the first win of the list. I really liked Gotham but Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D was disappointing. There are other shows out there but I really think the partnership Netflix and Marvel have is something special that will more often than not produce gold.
Narcos was nominated for the “Best Television Series – Drama” Golden Globe, missing out to one of the best TV shows I have ever seen Mr.Robot. House Of Cards is another fantastic show and really set the ball rolling for Netflix to take over TV with it’s originals. A tough loss on this one but with Game Of Thrones on the other side it was going to be a tough loss against Westeros.
I liked Hemlock Grove but it’s going up against The Walking Dead and it’s going to fall short. There is some excellent acting and Bill Skarsgard has been rewarded with the role of Pennywise the clown in the remake of IT. If you’ve seen the teaser poster for it you’ll know what I mean when I say Bill is one creepy looking clown, if Pennywise can be made any creepier that is!
Rather than going through every single Netflix Original I’ve selected hand full in the most prominent categories and put them up against the best of the rest. Netflix falls short, they still have work to do if they want to really get a stranglehold on all things entertainment. This is not to say that won’t happen, you could argue that it is just a matter of time, but that’s my humble opinion on it.
