I feel like I need to start off by saying these aren’t necessarily the best comics I have ever read but some of the most entertaining and the one’s that kept me reading them well into the early hours of the morning because they had power over me. That’s enough chit chat let’s kick things off with some Marvel.
Yes, it was made into a movie but the comic has so much more about it and is on a much grander scale, this really does have it all, X-Men, Fantastic 4 and The Avengers all play key roles. The main reason this makes the list is that it is only 7 issues long, which you can quite easily read it all in one weekend; and if you haven’t read it before I urge you to do just that.
And don’t worry, While I prefer DC Comics there is more Marvel to come.
The Killing Joke
And the first Batman comic to be on the list, but it’s not the last…it is the best though, The Killing Joke is one of the best graphic novels i have ever read at it’s my favourite (you can now mock my favourite in the comment section below) Written by Alan More who is one of the greatest comic book writers of all time and The Killing Joke is one of his finest works. It’s technically a graphic novel but it’s my list and it gets in.
Another comic that has been turned into a movie, albeit a disappointing animated movie. It could have and should have been one of the best Batman movies ever made.
I know, it’s a game, and the comic was made by the creators of Mortal Kombat but is that a bad thing? This comic series is so crazy and kills off characters with alarming regularity so it never feels stale or boring, that being said you shouldn’t get too attached to any of the characters. To get you back into comics I would stop reading after you finish year 2, in my opinion that’s when it starts going downhill. But it’s in there for the sheer amount of craziness that goes on, worth a read for any comic book fan.
Daredevil: Born Again
Written by Frank Miller who is one of few writers that is loved by both Marvel and DC Comics fans alike. This is by farm my favourite Daredevil story, fans of the Netflix show will already be familiar with some of the characters so I don’t want to give any spoilers away because it seems highly likely that they will use this story for a season at some point, so why not read it and threaten your friends with spoilers?
A modern telling of old folklore and fairy tales and currently being made into a movie, I know a lot of these have been made into movies already but there is a reason for that. If you like retelling of classic tales then this one is for you, while many have been done to death you still get the nostalgic feeling when reading it because we’ve all grown up with these characters and that just gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside and it can do the same to you!
Another collection of short comics, Watchmen is only 12 issues so it’s easy to read through, most people will be aware of the Zack Snyder movie and while I enjoyed that I preferred the comic, because comics aren’t limited with what they can do with a budget it gives the writers the chance to make things much grander and more awesome, and that’s exactly what Watchmen does.
The Dark Knight Returns
The second and last Batman comic on the list, a very different style to The Killing Joke. We see Batman and Superman fight and this is what should have played out in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice but that’s an argument for another day, but if that did leave a bad taste in your mouth head out and pick up this series and forget all about what you saw in the cinema. You might think Batman fighting Superman is enough of a story for the comic alone, but it’s not done there, I’m not ruining the story for you but check it out, fans of Batman won’t be disappointed.
I promise that this is the last one you can watch in movie form, but the movie was very comic like and if you watched and enjoyed that why not enjoy the source material? like many that have come before and after it the written story if better than that you see on the big screen, I don’t want to give away too much here just go and read it. Go now.
Have no illusion, this is one of the greatest comics ever. And if you don’t believe me; show me another comic that has led to the cartoonist winning a Pulitzer Prize, I don’t know of any and don’t think there is anyone else.
I’m not going to go into much detail about this because I won’t be able to do it justice, it’s not a comic for kids, as you can tell by the cover artwork it has a very dark source material.
And that’s my list! let me know what you think in the comments below and if you think I’ve missed any that should be on the list you can let me know on Twitter @nerdhubonline
